What are your current goals and why?
My current goals are to back squat 200lbs and get a strict handstand pushup as well as be able to perform muscle ups in workouts. I have never been able to back squat heavy due to back injuries, so now that I am properly fueled nutritionally and rehabbed I am excited to make this happen! A strict handstand pushup and muscle ups are two gymnastic skills I have been working on inconsistently for a while and I am excited to put more conscious effort towards them now!
What keeps you motivated?
The community at my gym is phenomenal. The members are authentic examples of physical goals I strive towards as well as incredibly supportive people. I genuinely enjoy going to the gym and working out with friends there, which makes the decision to go on tough days that much easier and the desire to stay and do needed additional accessory work for my goals that much stronger.
Why is it important to you to live a healthy lifestyle?
On a regular basis I see real-life cases of how nutrition and exercise play fundamental roles in longevity as well as how poor nutrition and inactivity can be a death sentence. As a nurse and active duty military member I want to practice what I preach and exemplify the lifestyle I feel can best benefit my fellow Airmen.
What is your most memorable experience in this program?
The first memory that comes to mind is of a workout a month or so into the program. It was the first workout in, I can’t even remember how long, that I felt strong, competent, and excited. I vividly remember how it felt to be able to push the pace and effort without feeling hungry, exhausted, or just beat down. It was the feeling that as an athlete I find the most pleasure in and what makes working out so enjoyable and meaningful.
BRIGHT SPOTS. Hype up your accomplishments, what are you most proud of so far since starting the program?
I am back squatting pain-free for the first time in years!! I also recently got a new bench press PR and am consistently seeing overall better performance in workouts. However, by far I am most proud of how my mindset has changed from “I look more athletic than I actually am,” to “I feel strong and capable.” This shift in the image I have of myself (along with a new relationship with food) is a great example of mental gains that I didn’t quite think about but now am the most proud of.
